Frequently Asked Questions

Climbing Kilimanjaro?
Here’s Everything You Need to Know!

After years of helping trekkers conquer Kilimanjaro, we’ve heard it all! So, we’ve collected the top questions asked by adventurers like you. From timing your climb to what to pack, these FAQs cover everything you need to know before setting foot on one of the world’s greatest trekking routes.

We recommend a minimum of eight days for climbers coming from the USA or Europe. This allows time to adjust and enjoy the trek. If you have more time, consider adding a wildlife safari or even a nearby climb of Mount Meru to your adventure.

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. However, the most popular months are January, February, July, August, and September. These months are drier and provide better hiking conditions. Avoid April, May, and November, as they are wetter and can make the climb more challenging.

Daily hikes are measured by time rather than distance. Typically, you’ll walk four to five hours in the morning and one to two more hours after lunch. Days are paced to be comfortable, with plenty of rest breaks, and you’ll be encouraged to walk slowly to acclimate.

The final ascent begins at night to avoid strong winds and catch clear views at dawn. Starting around midnight, the cooler air keeps you comfortable. Plus, witnessing the sunrise from the summit is a breathtaking reward after a long night of hiking.

You’ll only carry a small day pack weighing two to four kilograms, typically holding water and snacks. Porters will carry your main gear (up to 12 kilograms). Any luggage not needed for the climb can be safely stored at your hotel in Arusha.

You’ll be supported by a team of local experts, including guides, porters, and a professional cook. Each climber usually has three to four staff members. These friendly, experienced staff are passionate about Kilimanjaro and often have hundreds of summits under their belts.
