6 days marangu route Highlights

Famously known as the “Coca Cola route” – the Marangu route is one of the most popular routes leading to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro. It is considered the easiest route as the ascent on this route is constant and moderate with only the final leg to the summit slightly more challenging. Marangu is the only route that offers communal sleeping huts, equipped with beds and mattresses at every overnight site. The Marangu route uses the same ascent and descent route.

Day 1 Airport pick-up - Drop off at Hotel

You will be picked up by the staff of Jerry Tanzania Tours from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and driven to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening your guides will meet you at the hotel to brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.
Accommodation: Panama Garden Resort
Journey time and Distance: 1 hour, 40 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi.

Day 2 Moshi – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

After an early breakfast at your hotel (8:00 a.m.), you will be collected one hour later and taken to the Marangu Gate. After some paperwork at the gate, the porters will load the gear and your trek can begin. Soon you will find yourself in the misty forest – trees, ferns, flowers and birds abound. You might be lucky to catch a glimpse of the thumb less black and white colobus monkeys scrambling through the lush vegetation. Approximately 4 hours later, you will reach your destination for the day, the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide will take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy wonderful views of the Kenyan interior.
- Elevation: From 1,879 metres to 2,720 metres
- Walking time: 4 hours
- Distance: 8.1 kilometres
- Environment: Montane forest
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box and Dinner

Day 3 From Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Heading in the direction of Horombo Hut the vegetation will change to shrubs and you will cross the open moor land reaching your destination in approximately 5 to 6 hours. Looking back your path will already be shrouded in clouds and looking forward you will catch glimpses of Mawenzi, Kibo peak and the Masai steppe. After your evening meal you will drift off to sleep at the Horombo Hut.

Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, with buildings similar to Mandara with a capacity of 120 climbers! Horombo is normally bustling with hikers, guides and porters, with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatization. - Environment: Moorland
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box and Dinner

From  Kibo Hut, the summit is now a further 1195 metres of ascent. You will make your summit ascent tonight so you will go to go to bed early to get as much rest as possible.

- Distance: 9.6 kilometres
- Environment: Alpine desert
Meals: Breakfast, Picnic lunch box and Dinner

Day 6 From Kibo Hut to summit at Uhuru Peak, descent to Horombo Hut

You will wake up around 12:00 p.m., and after a warm drink and a snack you will shuffle off into the night, and this is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 metres) and also offers a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gilman’s Point (5,681 metres), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring great physical and mental effort. This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the Kili shuffle and move slowly. From Gillman’s Point, you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5,895 metres), the highest point in Africa. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend, taking photographs, before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest, you gather all your gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo hut (3 hours) for your overnight. The return to Horombo Hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14 hours, so be prepared for a very tough day. Later in the evening, you will have your last dinner on the mountain and have your well-earned sleep.
-Elevation: From 4,703 metres to 5,895 metres (and down to 3,720 metres)
- Highest Point: 5,895 metres (Uhuru Peak)

Accommodation: Horombo Hut

You will be offered a warm breakfast in the morning, after which you will depart from Horombo hut and start your descent down towards Marangu Gate, stopping at Mandara hut for a hot lunch at around midday. Marangu Gate is reached by around 4:00 p.m., and today’s section is approximately 19.7 kilometres which takes 6 -7 hours of walking time. Having reached Marangu Gate, you will be presented with your certificate, recognizing your tremendous effort. You will now drive back to Moshi for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebration.
