Best Time To Visit Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The best time to visit Tanzania for Ngorongoro Safaris is from June to February, especially for the Great Migration. Wildlife is abundant year-round, guaranteeing excellent viewing. March and April have heavy rains and fewer tourists, making wildlife harder to see.

Peak wildlife viewing occurs from July to September. January and February are great for seeing predators, especially during the wildebeest calving. The off-peak season is quieter but still offers superb wildlife sightings, despite occasional rains.

One full day is recommended for a Ngorongoro Crater tour. The crater is about 20 km in diameter, and a 4-5 hour visit gives you plenty of time to explore the wildlife and take in the sights. You can combine it with other Tanzania Safari Tours to see more.

On top of the crater, you can enjoy hiking, spotting giraffes, and following animal footprints. The plants and scenery provide a fantastic backdrop. This hike offers an alternative way to experience the Ngorongoro Safaris from a different perspective.

Yes, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is home to all of the Big Five, but they behave differently. Lions, elephants, and buffalos are easy to spot. Black rhinos are harder, with a 60-70% chance, and leopards are the most difficult, as they hide in the woodlands.

Both times offer great wildlife viewing, but if you love sunsets, an evening tour is ideal. The sunset over the crater floor is stunning and gives your Tanzania Destinations tour a magical finish.

The nearest airstrip is Ngorongoro Airstrip, about 20 minutes from the crater floor. However, it’s not frequently used. Most tourists use the Lake Manyara airstrip, which is an hour away and ideal for Tanzania Safari Tours.

There is no strict time limit, but you must leave the crater by 6 P.M. if staying close by, or by 5 P.M. if your accommodations are further.
