Lemosho route is one of the most preferred Kilimanjaro Routes as compared to others and it starts through a lush forest towards Shira plateau. Most of the tour operators recommend a minimum of 7 days’ to attempt this route. An 8 or 9 days’ attempt would be preferred for higher acclimatization and a successful summit, making it the best Kilimanjaro route for trekking.

  • It is more crowded.
  • Trek terrains in a row.

Marangu Route

Marangu Route Trekking

The Marangu Route is referred to as the coca-cola route. This is the only route that uses the same path to and fro. Marangu route is the most crowded route to Kilimanjaro. The route is a comfortable walking path and an easy route to climb.

However, if you are doing it in 6 days with acclimatization, you will be able to successfully summit Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Marangu route success rate depends according to the days taken to climb. If you are attempting a 5 days climb, the success rate would be 60-70% but if you are attempting 6 days or more with additional acclimatization, then the success rate would go up to 80-90%.

  • Hut accommodation, hence camp types of equipment are not required.
Disadvantages:
  • Lowest success rate
  • Too crowded
  • Camping is not allowed.

Rongai Route:

The Rongai Route is the only route that climbs from the north, the climb is from the south-east and you can see both sides of the mountain. The extra cost makes this route a bit more expensive. The Rongai Route has an easy climb profile like the Marangu route and it rises steadily, there aren’t any steeps involved and also no ups and downs.

Summit Success Rate:

With a good operator, you have an 80% chance to make it to the crater rim and 70% to make it to the Uhuru peak.

  • Higher Price due to additional travel.
  • Considerably less scenic.

Umbwe Route:

The Umbwe Route is a direct route, very steep, very tough route in comparison to other routes. The Umbwe route meets the Machame route near the Barranco Camp on the trails of the next day and this shows how steep the Umbwe route is. This route is preferred by most experienced climbers and not for the fresh climbers. This is the route that is not used much.
